Family Road Trip: Henderson, Tucson and Provo

Photo borrowed from my dad :)

Although I didn’t plan this trip, it was still an adventure, so it’s getting a little mini blog post! As you can imagine, a lot of the trip was spent on the road listening to music, watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, playing games and just enjoying the scenery. You may ask: Zoe, why were you on the road and going to these three random cities? Well I’ll tell you!

A few months ago, my mom had come across an announcement made by Amanda Palmer, half of the duo The Dresden Dolls, Singer-Songwriter, feminist, activist, bad ass. She and her husband, the author Neil Gaiman (The Graveyard Book, Norse Mythology, and American Gods, to name a few of his books) decided that they were going to do another event together that is called “An Evening with Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer”. It was a last minute thing they decided they were going to do in Tucson, Arizona while moving her parents there. So mom, being a fan of both of them, decided to get tickets for the whole family to go.

But apparently Tucson, Arizona is VERY far away from Boise, Idaho. So we drove to Henderson, spent the night, and then drove to Tucson to go to the event that night. I hadn’t really heard of Amanda Palmer or knew anything about her (and frankly still don’t) before the event and I roughly knew who Neil Gaiman was because I have a few of his books (that I embarrassingly haven’t read yet). So I basically went to this event blindly because mom said it’d be cool. And then we went and all I could say afterwards was wow.

Amanda Palmer is awesome because she writes kind of quirky songs and plays the ukulele and piano, and Neil Gaiman is funny and has such a soothing voice when he reads something. Both of them were so real with everything that they said and and sang and read. It was cool how the event was part concert, part literature reading. There were duos, a poem about women in science, humorous Norse mythology, and songs about ukulele’s and Judy Blume.

The next morning we headed out of town to drive to Provo, Utah, spent the night there, and then went to the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City before heading home. The zoo we had been to before, but it was still really fun to go and get a chance to stretch our legs before getting back on the road and we got to see lots of animals.

Okay....NOW stay tuned for Silver Falls and a big announcement. ;)

Where we ate: In N’ Out
Rubios
Wiener Schnitzel
Basically all the places we don’t have in Idaho but know and love thanks to living in California :P
